What Is a Sinus Lift?

A sinus lift, also known as sinus augmentation or sinus floor elevation, is a surgical procedure that adds bone to the upper jaw in the area of the back teeth (molars and premolars).

The maxillary sinuses are air-filled spaces above your upper teeth. When upper back teeth are lost, the bone in this area shrinks and the sinus can expand downward, leaving insufficient bone height for implants.

During a sinus lift, the sinus membrane is carefully lifted upward and bone graft material is placed beneath it. This creates the necessary bone depth for stable, long-lasting implants.

You may need a sinus lift if:

  • You have lost upper back teeth
  • CT scan shows insufficient bone height
  • Your sinus has expanded into the bone area
  • You have had bone loss from gum disease

The Sinus Lift Procedure

How we create bone for your upper jaw implants.

1

CT Scan Assessment

3D imaging reveals your sinus anatomy and the amount of bone augmentation needed.

2

Accessing the Sinus

A small window is made in the bone to access the sinus membrane.

3

Membrane Elevation

The sinus membrane is carefully lifted upward to create space for bone.

4

Bone Graft Placement

Bone graft material is placed beneath the elevated membrane.

5

Healing

The area heals for 4-9 months as new bone forms, ready for implants.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a sinus lift?
A sinus lift, also called sinus augmentation, is a procedure that adds bone to the upper jaw in the area of the molars and premolars. The sinus membrane is lifted and bone graft material is placed beneath it to increase bone height for implants.
Why do I need a sinus lift?
When upper back teeth are lost, the bone in that area naturally shrinks and the sinus expands downward. This can leave insufficient bone height for implant placement. A sinus lift creates the bone depth needed for stable implants.
How much does a sinus lift cost?
A sinus lift at our London clinic costs between £1,500 and £3,000 depending on the extent of augmentation required and whether it is combined with implant placement.
Is a sinus lift painful?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so you will not feel pain during surgery. Most patients report mild to moderate discomfort for a few days afterwards, managed with standard pain medication.
How long does a sinus lift take to heal?
Healing typically takes 4-9 months before implants can be placed. In some cases, implants can be placed at the same time as the sinus lift if there is enough existing bone for initial stability.
What are the risks of sinus lift surgery?
The main risk is perforation of the sinus membrane, which can usually be repaired during surgery. Post-operative sinus infection is rare. Dr Ope has performed hundreds of sinus lifts with excellent outcomes.
