What Is Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that adds bone material to areas of the jaw where bone has been lost. This creates a solid foundation for dental implants in patients who would otherwise lack sufficient bone.

Bone loss commonly occurs after tooth extraction, from gum disease, or simply from years of wearing dentures. Without intervention, this bone loss can make implant placement difficult or impossible.

Modern bone grafting materials are highly effective, allowing us to rebuild bone and enable successful implant treatment for patients who were previously told they were not suitable.

Common reasons for bone grafting:

  • Tooth extraction without immediate implant
  • Long-term tooth loss
  • Periodontal (gum) disease
  • Wearing dentures for many years
  • Insufficient bone height or width

Patient Story

Hear from a patient who had bone grafting as part of their implant treatment.

I needed both a gum graft and an implant. Having a periodontist do both meant everything was coordinated perfectly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need bone grafting for dental implants?
Not everyone needs bone grafting. A 3D CT scan during your consultation will reveal your bone density and whether grafting is required. Techniques like All-on-4 often avoid the need for grafting by using angled implants.
How much does bone grafting cost?
Bone grafting costs between £500 and £2,500 depending on the extent of grafting required. Minor grafts at the time of implant placement are at the lower end, while major bone augmentation procedures cost more.
Where does the bone graft material come from?
We typically use synthetic bone material or processed donor bone, both of which are safe and effective. In some cases, bone from another site in your mouth may be used.
How long does bone grafting take to heal?
Minor bone grafts heal within 3-4 months. Major bone augmentation procedures may require 4-6 months of healing before implants can be placed.
Is bone grafting painful?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so you will not feel pain during surgery. Post-operative discomfort is typically mild to moderate and managed with standard pain medication.
Can bone grafting and implant placement be done together?
In many cases, yes. Minor bone grafts can be placed at the same time as implants, reducing the total treatment time. Dr Ope will advise on the best approach for your situation.
